The Lodge RSPB reserve

The Lodge RSPB Reserve is a nature reserve spanning several hundred acres of woodland, heathland, and grassland that supports many bird and wildlife species. The grounds include multiple walking trails, an observation tower, accessible parking, a shop, and refreshment facilities.

This site was established in 1961 by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds as a haven for bird conservation. An Iron Age hillfort sits on Galley Hill, reminding visitors of how people have inhabited and shaped this landscape over millennia.

The place serves as a gathering space where visitors experience guided walks and birdwatching sessions throughout the year. These programs help people connect directly with the natural world around them.

Wear comfortable shoes and use the observation tower for closer views of birds in their habitats. Paths can become muddy after rain, so waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear help you move through the grounds more easily.

The reserve is home to specialized woodland habitats that attract woodpeckers, nuthatches, and treecreepers, species that visitors rarely encounter elsewhere. These birds thrive here and reward patient observers with memorable sightings.
