Kyle of Tongue Bridge, Road bridge in Sutherland, Scotland.
The Kyle of Tongue Bridge is a concrete structure spanning 183 meters across the bay with eighteen sections supported by paired concrete pillars. The crossing forms part of a transportation corridor linking communities on both sides of this sea inlet in the Highlands.
The structure was completed in 1971 from a design by Alexander Gibb, replacing ferry service that had operated until 1956. It provided a direct road link where travelers previously had to make a lengthy detour around the bay.
The structure connects communities across the Kyle of Tongue sea loch, integrating with the Scottish Highland transportation network along the A838 route.
The structure cuts travel time significantly by eliminating a detour of about 16 kilometers around the inlet. The road is well accessed through the A838 and provides passage for various forms of transport.
The crossing rests on seventeen pairs of splayed concrete pillars specifically engineered to withstand strong tidal currents. This innovative foundation system allowed construction in one of Scotland's most powerful tidal areas.
