Church of St John Lateran, Hengrave

Church of St John Lateran is a medieval church in Hengrave with a distinctive round tower notably wider than typical bell towers. A south porch and crenellated parapet complete the building's structure.

The church was built around 1250 as an independent religious structure. It merged with Flempton parish in 1589 and later became a burial place for residents of nearby Hengrave Hall.

The battlements display heraldic shields belonging to the de Hemegrave family alongside religious symbols. These carvings on stone served as visible marks of local power and devotion for those who approached the church.

The church is easy to reach on foot from the village center and has parking nearby. As an active place of worship, visiting times may be limited, so it is worth checking ahead with the local community.

Two faded wall paintings from the early 14th century remain inside, showing Saint Catherine and an unidentified figure holding a shield. These rare survivors suggest the church was once much more decorated with religious art.
