Church of St Mary

St Mary's Church stands in a remote location with thick stone walls, a traditional timber roof structure, and whitewashed exterior walls reflecting medieval architecture.

The church, established in 1150, contains medieval wall paintings in the barrel-vaulted chancel, representing significant religious artworks from the early 12th century.

The chancel features Northern Europe's most extensive collection of Romanesque frescoes, including depictions of Christ in Majesty and biblical narratives.

The church opens daily from 10 AM to 6 PM between March and October, and from 10 AM to 4 PM from November to February.

The oak timber roof structure, dated between 1120 and 1150 through dendrochronology testing, ranks as the oldest medieval roof in Britain.
