Kilton Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Lockwood, England
Kilton Castle is a medieval fortress whose stone ruins occupy a strategic hilltop overlooking Kilton Beck valley. The structure features natural defensive slopes on three sides that once protected the stronghold from attack.
The fortress was first built in timber around 1140 and later rebuilt in stone by 1190. It passed through the hands of noble families including the de Brus and de Kilton.
The Grade I listed building status of Kilton Castle reflects its exceptional architectural and historical value within England's national heritage collection.
The ruins sit roughly 130 meters east of Castle Cottages and are open to visitors without restriction. You can walk around and examine the medieval structure from different angles along the hillside.
Kilton Castle was built without a keep, making it one of the first castles in northern England to deviate from traditional Norman military architecture.
