Created in 1686 by Grinling Gibbons' workshop, the statue remained standing through the Glorious Revolution when James II lost his throne in 1688.
The statue inscription displays James II's full royal title in Latin, marking him as king of England, Scotland, France, Ireland and Defender of Faith.

The statue moved multiple times across London, from Whitehall Palace to Gwydyr House, then the Admiralty building before reaching its current location in 1947.
