Clare Cottage, Literary museum and thatched cottage in Helpston, Great Britain
Clare Cottage is a historic house in Helpston, Cambridgeshire, featuring traditional thatch roofing, white exterior walls, and windows distributed across two stories. The restored building now contains exhibition spaces, gardens, and a small shop with a cafe.
This stone cottage with its thatch roof was built in earlier centuries and became closely tied to poet John Clare, who grew up within its walls. Later restoration work funded by Heritage Lottery helped preserve and open the building to visitors.
This cottage is today a museum dedicated to English poet John Clare, displaying his original manuscripts and personal possessions that reveal how he lived and worked. The exhibition shows visitors the world he knew and his deep ties to this place.
Visitors can explore the restored interior rooms and gardens, which have been improved through extensive renovation work. The site offers good walking paths and is reasonably accessible on foot for those with normal mobility.
The northern section of the building contains an original dovecote dating from the Elizabethan period, left behind by the Fitzwilliam family who once lived there. This rare survivor offers a window into the earlier inhabitants and the long story of the place.
