Fochabers, Gordon Episcopal Chapel And Parsonage, Episcopal church building in Fochabers, Scotland
Gordon Episcopal Chapel is a church building in Fochabers constructed from dressed sandstone with a two-level design. The chapel occupies the upper floor while the lower level formerly housed a school and parsonage.
Construction took place between 1832 and 1834 under architect Archibald Simpson. Funding came from Elizabeth Brodie, wife of the fifth Duke of Gordon.
The chapel houses a remarkable collection of stained glass windows created by Morris and Co that reflect Pre-Raphaelite artistic traditions. These windows shape the visual experience when you walk through the interior.
The building provides support for people with mobility limitations through ground-level access to a chapel room. Visitors can follow services through a transmission system if they prefer not to climb to the upper chapel.
The building closed from 1848 to 1852 due to disagreements over religious practice. Reopening followed after local supporters petitioned Charles Gordon-Lennox for its restoration.
