24 Vinicombe Street, Botanic Garden Garage
24 Vinicombe Street, Botanic Garden Garage, Category A listed architectural structure in Glasgow, United Kingdom.
24 Vinicombe Street is a Category A listed garage featuring green and white glazed tiles with extensive windows across its five-bay facade arranged in two stories. The three central bays display the most prominent glazing, creating a striking composition of horizontal emphasis and transparent surfaces.
Designed by architect David Valentine Wyllie and built between 1906 and 1912, it represents Glasgow's earliest surviving purpose-built motor garage. The structure emerged during a moment when cities were rapidly adapting to accommodate automobiles as everyday machines.
The building reflects early industrial attitudes toward car ownership through its bold architectural statement on a residential street. Its colorful faience and generous windows demonstrate how seriously architects treated this new commercial purpose.
The building sits directly on Vinicombe Street near the Botanic Garden and is easily viewed from the public pavement. Today it houses restaurants, a gym, and offices, so you can enter to see the interior or simply admire the exterior facade.
The garage included an ingenious ramp system running through a neighboring tenement building, making it one of Europe's earliest multi-story parking facilities. This hidden infrastructure allowed drivers to store vehicles across multiple levels years before such systems became common elsewhere.
