Aquarium Pula, Public aquarium in Verudela, Croatia
Aquarium Pula sits inside Fort Verudela and displays over 200 marine species across different sections. You find Adriatic fish, Mediterranean animals, tropical species, and freshwater creatures arranged within the old stone fortress walls.
The fortress was built in the late 1800s by Austria-Hungary as a coastal defense structure. The building later received a new purpose and became an aquarium in 2002.
The facility shows how people here relate to the sea and its creatures through daily observation. You see the same fish and animals that locals encounter in the waters beyond the coast.
The building sits right on the coast and is easy to reach on foot or by public transport. A visit usually takes between two and three hours depending on how much time you spend in each section.
There is a special area for injured sea turtles that are cared for here and later released back into the sea. This rescue mission is a key part of the work happening on-site.
