Fort Bourguignon

Fort Bourguignon is a circular coastal fortification in Pula featuring a diameter of about 47 meters and twenty casemates positioned along its outer defensive perimeter. Visitors can access the exterior grounds, though the interior sections remain closed under management of the Archaeological Museum of Istria.

Austria built this fortress between 1861 and 1866 to defend Pula harbor, which served as the empire's principal naval base in the Adriatic. The structure was part of a larger defensive strategy for the region.

The fort shifted from a military stronghold to a cultural venue, hosting electronic music events that drew people from across the region. This change shows how coastal defense structures can find new life in modern times.

You can walk around the exterior grounds freely, though expect the interior to be inaccessible. The location offers good views from the harbor and is particularly visible from the water.

The interior contains three rifle embrasures on the lower level and one cannon opening on the upper level, connected through an internal corridor. This layout reveals how Austrian military architects carefully planned the flow of troops and defensive firepower.
