Old Bridge, Medieval bridge in Bridgend, Wales
The Old Bridge is a medieval stone crossing over the River Ogmore that features two unequal arches. Built to connect the town center, it now serves only as a pedestrian passage and stands as one of Bridgend's oldest structures.
The bridge was constructed around 1425 and suffered severe damage during a 1775 flood that damaged its western section. Repairs following this event reshaped how parts of the structure looked and function.
The bridge's Welsh name, Yr Hen Bont, reflects the strong connection to local heritage, leading to its designation as a Grade II* listed building.
The bridge is easily accessible and the crossing is straightforward without obstacles for visitors on foot. However, the narrow width and uneven stone surface mean you need to watch your step and move carefully.
A fourth arch of the original structure was discovered in 2015 inside a local apothecary building's basement. This finding revealed that the bridge once had more openings than what visitors see today.
