Sonagiri, Jain temple complex in Datia, India
Sonagiri is a Jain temple complex comprising 103 white temples, with 77 positioned on a hilltop and 26 scattered through the surrounding village. A network of pathways connects these buildings, creating a layout that encourages visitors to move between the different structures and courtyards.
The temples were constructed beginning in the 9th century and display architectural elements that reflect the development of Digambar Jain religious structures of that era. This early building period established a style that later additions to the site continued to follow.
The main temple houses an 11-meter-tall statue of Chandraprabhu, and the central courtyard features a tall Manastambha column that devotees walk past during prayer rituals. The temples serve as active places of worship where visitors encounter pilgrims performing daily spiritual practices throughout the year.
The site is accessible via the Dabra-Datia Road and can also be reached by train through the Agra-Jhansi railway line. Comfortable shoes are recommended since exploring the hilltop temples involves climbing stairs and walking on uneven surfaces.
Each year after the Holi festival, the old flag atop the temple spire is replaced with a new golden one in a special ceremony. This annual ritual marks a moment of renewal that locals and visiting pilgrims witness together.
