Gantkofel, Mountain summit in South Tyrol, Italy.
Gantkofel, also known as Monte Macaion, is a mountain summit in the Southern Rhaetian Alps in South Tyrol, Italy, reaching around 1,866 meters. Its faces are steep, and several marked trails lead up from the valley below.
The mountain has long marked a natural boundary between different communities in South Tyrol, shaping how settlements on each side developed over the centuries. Its position at the edge of two linguistic zones made it a reference point for generations.
The peak goes by two names: Gantkofel in German and Monte Macaion in Italian, which reflects everyday life in South Tyrol where both languages are used side by side. Trail signs along the routes often show both names together.
A good starting point is the village of Predonico, where marked trail number 8 heads toward the summit. Sturdy footwear is recommended since parts of the path are rocky and uneven.
From the top, you can see both Corno Bianco and Corno Nero at the same time, with the city of Bolzano spread out below in the valley. This pairing of the two contrasting peaks in one view is something you cannot get from most other nearby spots.
