Hase, Mountain art installation in Artesina, Italy.
Hase is a massive wool sculpture shaped like a sprawling rabbit that covers a mountainside near Artesina. The pink knitted structure spreads across Colletto Fava as if the animal had stretched out to rest on the slope.
The sculpture was created over several years starting around 2000 by Vienna-based artist collective Gelitin and completed in 2005. This large-scale project required extensive planning and collaboration to bring the giant rabbit to life on the mountainside.
Local women contributed their knitting skills to shape this artwork, blending traditional craft with contemporary art in the mountains. The collaboration between residents and artists transformed this into a work that feels rooted in the community rather than imposed from outside.
The best way to reach this artwork is on foot from Artesina village, following a hiking trail uphill to the installation. The walk takes around 30 minutes and you will need proper footwear since the path has a steady incline.
Small wooden ladders are positioned around the sculpture allowing visitors to climb onto its surface and feel the wool texture firsthand. This interactive element transforms the visit from simply viewing into a hands-on exploration of the artwork itself.
