Castel Pietra, Medieval fortress in Tonadico, Italy
The castle stands on a large erratic boulder overlooking the Primiero Valley, controlling the ancient route between Fiera del Primiero and Agordo.
First documented in 1064, Castel Pietra became a direct Tyrol fief in 1339 after Charles of Luxembourg captured it during his expedition against Venetian expansion.
The castle structure contained forty-six different rooms in 1519, indicating its transformation from a military fortress into a noble residence.
Access requires climbing a suspended steel staircase to reach the northern part of the rocky spur, followed by an exposed path through a wall crack.
Multiple fires damaged the castle between the 16th and 17th centuries, yet its owners rebuilt it each time until its final abandonment in the 18th century.
