Reinegg Castle, Medieval castle in Sarntal, Italy
Reinegg is a castle situated on a hilltop east of Sarntal village with a central tower and walls more than 2 meters thick. The structure displays multiple defensive features typical of medieval fortifications in this region.
The castle was built in the mid-13th century and first appeared in written records around 1263 under Countess Elisabeth of Appiano. It later passed to Count Meinhard II who expanded his territorial control in the region.
The name Reinegg comes from its hilltop location with commanding views over the valley below. Today the structure remains a landmark in the landscape, with its stone walls still shaping how people perceive the surrounding area.
The castle is privately owned by the Vergerio family since 1963 and is not open to visitors from the inside. You can view and photograph it from the surrounding area and hillside paths nearby.
The castle contains an underground passage that connects to a neighboring farm, revealing how residents planned escape routes during sieges. This hidden tunnel shows the ingenuity of medieval defensive planning in the region.
