Mackenzie Castle, Art Nouveau castle in Castelletto district, Genoa, Italy
Mackenzie Castle is a castle in the Castelletto district of Genoa combining Art Nouveau architecture with elements of an older villa. The building spans four above-ground floors and a basement level, featuring crenellated walls, towers, and multiple courtyards.
The castle was built between 1893 and 1905 by architect Gino Coppedè for Scottish insurance broker Evan Mackenzie. It was constructed on the site of a 16th-century villa that was incorporated into the new design.
The castle blends Scottish and Italian design elements throughout its rooms and decorations. Visitors can observe how a wealthy foreigner shaped his home in Genoa and which artworks and furnishings were important to him.
The site now functions as a private museum and auction house with regular exhibitions and sales events. It is advisable to check opening times in advance since these vary depending on events held there.
The entrance hall houses a marble Venus statue, a marble throne, and a large fireplace decorated with paintings by Carlo Coppedè. These artworks give a sense of the original owner's collecting passion.
