Chiesa dei Santi Giuseppe Tecla e Rita ed ex Convento, church in Ferrara (FE)
The Chiesa dei Santi Giuseppe Tecla e Rita ed ex Convento is a baroque church in Ferrara with elaborate details and dynamic shapes, built in the 17th century. The building features a long nave with a wooden roof, four octagonal side chapels with their own altars and colored marble decorations, and a bell tower added in the late 1600s.
The church complex was established in 1622 when the Augustinian order was granted permission to settle in Ferrara, with the church itself opening in 1671. After suffering bomb damage during World War II and additional harm from earthquakes, the bell tower was rebuilt in 1958.
The church is dedicated to Saint Joseph, Saint Tecla, and Saint Rita, who hold special meaning for the local community. On their feast days, people gather to pray and light candles in the chapels dedicated to these saints.
Visitors should check opening hours in advance, as they can change during holidays or special events. Inside the building, it is important to be respectful by keeping noise to a minimum, and photography should only be done if explicitly permitted.
In the past, the convent library was a place where scholars studied Jewish culture, highlighting this site's role in Ferrara's intercultural history. The decorated ceilings and surviving frescoes inside continue to reflect this remarkable chapter of the place.
