The rectangular fortress has four corner towers, stone battlements, and defensive walls that encircle a central courtyard with a deep water well.

Construction of the castle started in 1392 by Pietro De' Berardi, with additional floors and towers added by Leonello Acclozamora in 1451.

The castle houses the Sacred Art Museum of Marsica, displaying religious artifacts, sculptures, and paintings from the 6th to 18th centuries.

The castle functions as offices for the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and includes conference rooms, exhibition spaces, and areas for educational workshops.

The castle contains the Torlonia Collection, featuring archaeological findings from the drainage of Lake Fucino, including a limestone relief from 200 CE.
