Monte Gonare, Mountain summit in Orani, Italy
Monte Gonare is a mountain standing 1083 meters high between Sarule and Orani with three distinct peaks and limestone rock formations throughout. Mediterranean plants cover the slopes, and an old chapel sits at the summit.
The mountain was named for Judge Gonario II, who built a sanctuary in the 12th century after surviving a perilous sea journey. That chapel became a religious center for the surrounding communities and still marks the summit today.
The sanctuary draws pilgrims who climb to the chapel to experience local religious traditions passed down through generations. The routes visitors take and the gatherings there show how this place remains important to the surrounding communities.
Several hiking trails lead to the summit, with the main one starting from Sarule and taking roughly four hours for the round trip. The terrain is rocky and exposed to sun, so bring sturdy shoes, plenty of water, and sun protection.
The mountain has an unusual mix of limestone and granite rock that supports a special variety of life. Rare frog species found only in Sardinia live here in the crevices and wet hollows among the rocks.
