Sanctuary of the Vergine dei Martiri, Fonni

The Sanctuary of the Vergine dei Martiri exhibits a design with a barrel vault ceiling and two semicircular chapels adjacent to an elevated presbytery.

Construction of the original church began in 1610 when Franciscan Father George Acillara received the land from Don Stefano Melis, with completion in 1706.

The sanctuary features artistic contributions from Pietro Antonio and Gregorio Are, who created paintings throughout the religious structure.

The sanctuary accommodates 1000 visitors and measures 157 meters in length, 92 meters in width, and reaches a maximum height of 45 meters.

An underground sanctuary dedicated to St Gregory the Great contains two chambers with polychrome stucco imagery and tempera ceiling paintings.
