Sanctuary of the Vergine dei Martiri, Fonni

The Sanctuary of the Vergine dei Martiri is a large religious building with a barrel vault ceiling and two semicircular chapels positioned symmetrically on either side. The elevated choir area sits above the main floor, creating a layered interior space.

Construction started in 1610 when a Franciscan friar received the land, leading to a century-long building process. The structure was finally completed in 1706 after extended work across multiple decades.

The shrine holds religious significance for the local community, who gather here for worship and celebrations throughout the year. The space reflects the spiritual practices and devotion that have shaped daily life in this mountain town.

Below the main church lies a hidden underground sanctuary dedicated to St Gregory the Great with decorated stucco work and painted ceilings. Few visitors realize this lower level exists or venture down to see its ornate details.
