Bruncu Spina, Mountain summit in Gennargentu massif, Sardinia, Italy.
Bruncu Spina is a mountain summit in the Gennargentu massif that rises to 1,829 meters (6,001 feet). Its steep slopes are covered with low scrubland vegetation, transitioning to holm oak woodlands at lower elevations.
The name Bruncu Spina comes from Sardinian language, referring to thorny plants or thistle varieties that grow on its slopes. This naming reflects the mountain's distinctive vegetation character.
The mountain hosts multiple protected species including golden eagles, Bonelli's eagles, red kites, griffon vultures, and the endemic Sardinian wildcat population.
Two marked trails lead to the summit: the Gennargentu T-721 covering about 5 kilometers and the shorter Arcu Artilai to Bruncu Spina T-721A route. The mountain is most accessible during warmer months when weather conditions are favorable.
The mountain functions as a winter ski destination from December through March with ski lifts on the Fonni side and a moving walkway on the Desulo side. This makes it a rare spot where winter sports and mountain activities coexist in the region.
