Monte Monarco

Monte Monarco is a mountain in the Lugano Prealps standing at 858 meters, located in the Varese province of Lombardy. Multiple hiking trails wind through forested slopes leading to the chapel at the summit, which sits near open areas offering panoramic views.

The mountain trails were established as part of regional development initiatives connecting communities across Varese province using traditional mule tracks. These routes have served local people for generations as pathways between settlements.

A small chapel with a Redeemer statue sits at the top, marking this place as an important spiritual landmark for the region. Visitors often pause inside to experience the quiet and reflect on their climb.

The hike starts from Induno Olona at Montallegro, where a large parking area next to an agriturismo marks the trailhead. Depending on which route you take, the walk takes several hours and requires sturdy footwear and moderate fitness.

On clear days, four distinct lakes can be seen from the summit: Lake Varese, Lake Maggiore, Lake Monate, and Lake Comabbio. This rare vantage point makes the spot popular with photographers and nature watchers.
