Necropolis of Is Loccis-Santus, archäologische Stätte in Italien
The Necropolis of Is Loccis-Santus is a burial ground with 13 chambered tombs carved into rock and built with stacked stones. The graves are scattered across a small hill, where you can also see a partly ruined stone tower from the Nuragic period and structures from World War II.
The necropolis was first used in the 4th millennium BC and continued to receive new burials until around 1500 BC. It contains graves from multiple ancient cultures, including Ozieri, Abealzu-Filigosa, Monte Claro, Bell Beaker, and Bonnanaro peoples.
The domus de janas tombs display flower-like shapes that are unique to the Sulcis region and reflect the builders' artistic skill. The bell-shaped pottery found within these graves, decorated with dots and lines, reveals the ancient people's beliefs and craftsmanship.
The hilltop offers wide views of the landscape but provides little shade, so bring water, sun protection, and wear comfortable shoes. The best time to visit is during daylight when sunlight highlights the stone structures and creates shadows across the tombs.
A fallen menhir stands beside one of the tombs, while other upright stones are scattered across the surrounding fields. These monoliths were likely used for rituals or as landscape markers by the ancient inhabitants.
