Oasi naturale di Guardiaregia-Campochiaro, Regional nature reserve in Campochiaro and Guardiaregia, Italy.
The Oasi naturale di Guardiaregia-Campochiaro is a protected landscape in the Molise region featuring deep gorges, mountain peaks, and broad beech forests spread across two municipalities. Three distinct natural zones invite exploration: the Quirino Stream gorges, Mount Mutria, and Campochiaro mountain, each with its own character.
The reserve gained protected status in 1996 through a local municipal decision and was later expanded to include additional territory. This expansion reflected a growing recognition of the importance of preserving the broader mountain landscape.
The name derives from the guardians who once watched over the mountain passes, and this protective spirit continues today through the conservation work that visitors witness. Local communities have built their services around nature-based tourism, offering guided experiences and sustainable lodging for those exploring the landscape.
Access works best using the marked trails that cross through the different natural zones, each offering varied difficulty levels for different abilities. Bring sturdy footwear and water, especially when walking longer routes through the gorges and mountain forests.
The area holds two of Italy's deepest caves: the Pozzo della Neve descends approximately 1050 meters while Cul di Bove extends about 910 meters into the mountain. These underground spaces are accessible to experienced cave explorers and reveal the geological complexity beneath the landscape.
