Monte Mutria, Mountain peak in Matese range, Italy
Monte Mutria is a mountain peak in the Matese range, sitting on the border between Campania and Molise at around 1,800 meters. The summit sits on a limestone ridge, with beech forests on the northern slopes and open rocky terrain on the southern face.
Italic peoples settled in this mountain area around 2,500 years ago, using the high ground as shelter and living space. Unlike the coastal regions of the same period, this interior territory was largely untouched by Greek influence.
Shepherds still bring their flocks to the high meadows of the mountain each summer, following routes that have been used for centuries. The wide open grasslands near the top show clear signs of this long-standing grazing tradition.
The northern and southern slopes offer very different walking conditions, so it helps to choose your route based on your experience and the weather on the day. Starting early gives you more time to adjust your pace on either side of the ridge.
On a clear day, the summit offers a view of both the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west and the Adriatic coast to the east at the same time. This double sea view from a single point is rare along the Apennine spine.
