Castle of Gioia Sannitica, Medieval castle in Gioia Sannitica, Italy.
Castle of Gioia Sannitica is a medieval fortification set on a hilltop in the Caselle district, with thick defensive walls and traces of a three-level residence for nobility. The site spreads across an archaeological zone and a main fortress area, connected by a walkway that runs beside the stone fortifications.
The fortress began as a Norman stronghold but faced catastrophe in the mid-15th century when an earthquake and waves of plague swept through the region. This sudden collapse left the structures frozen in time, offering later excavators a detailed snapshot of medieval life.
The castle once held about 40 homes organized by social rank, with separate quarters for nobles and common people. Walking through the remains, you can see how the size and position of each dwelling reflected who lived there.
The site divides into two main areas you can walk through: the archaeological excavation zone and the main fortification, with pathways marking the route. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is uneven and some sections involve rougher paths alongside the stone walls.
Near the central tower stands the remains of a large fireplace that once warmed the main castle hall, revealing where the fortress's most important residents gathered. This fireplace survives as one of the best-preserved interior features, showing what daily life was like for those who held power here.
