Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie, Baroque shrine and church in Cerreto Sannita, Italy.
The Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie is a Baroque shrine in Cerreto Sannita combining a church, Capuchin monastery, and pilgrim residence in one religious complex. The interior features a marble altar with a painted altarpiece showing the Madonna and Child rendered in Baroque style.
The sanctuary was originally built in 1583 and underwent major reconstruction after the devastating 1688 earthquake that heavily damaged both the church and monastery. This rebuilding shaped the Baroque appearance seen today.
The sanctuary holds deep meaning for local devotees and pilgrims who come to venerate the Madonna, making it a focal point for religious practice in the region. The Capuchin community has maintained its presence here for centuries, shaping the spiritual character of the place.
The complex is open to visitors who can explore the main church and adjacent monastery areas. Both pilgrims and tourists can visit at various times to see the architecture and altar space.
The refectory holds sculptures and decorations from the Solimene school, revealing that accomplished artists created works specifically for this space. Visitors can also see the original 16th-century doorway in the pronaos area, graced with a 1584 fresco above it.
