Palazzo del viceconte

Palazzo del viceconte is an 18th century residence with a rectangular layout and plastered walls decorated with carved details. The entrance features a portal made from diamond-pointed stones sourced from ancient Cerreto, while its southern side rests on stone arches that overlook the attached gardens.

A cloth merchant named Nicola Mendillo built the residence after the 1688 earthquake destroyed much of Cerreto. It later became the official residence for the viceconte under the Carafa family's administration.

This residence represents the relationship between local nobility and the community, as shown through its prominent placement and architectural choices. The building served as a visible center of authority that shaped how people experienced the town's hierarchy.

The palace sits at a major intersection in the center of town and is easy to locate when walking the main routes. The stone arch terrace on the south side offers a good sense of the surrounding landscape and the building's position within the town.

The southern section of this residence remains unfinished from the 18th century, a result of the Mendillo family's decision to relocate to another estate. This incomplete portion is still visible today and reveals how the family's choices shaped the building's final form.
