The fortress stands on a rocky spur between Chienti Valley and San Luca Stream, featuring defensive walls made of alternating limestone and sandstone layers.
The Da Varano family initiated construction in the 13th century, transforming the structure from a fortified residence into a defensive stronghold by the 14th century.
The fortress now functions as a permanent exhibition center for artistic crafts, managed by the Arts and Crafts Association since 1997.
The exterior of the fortress remains accessible to visitors, offering views of the surrounding landscape and valleys from its elevated position.
The fortress generated income for medieval lords through tolls collected from travelers using the road connecting Rome to the Adriatic Sea.
