Rocca Varano

Rocca Varano is a medieval fortress in Camerino that sits on a rocky outcrop between the Chienti Valley and the San Luca Stream. The defensive walls display alternating layers of limestone and sandstone, which creates a distinctive striped pattern across the structure.

The Da Varano family began construction in the 13th century as a fortified residence, later transforming it during the 14th century into a proper defensive stronghold. This shift reflected the family's growing military needs along a key regional trade corridor.

The fortress now serves as an exhibition space for local artisans and craftspeople, managed by the regional arts and crafts association since the late 1990s. Visitors can observe traditional techniques and see works created by makers who continue historical craft practices.
