Rocca Aldobrandesca

Rocca Aldobrandesca is a medieval fortress in Arcidosso that rises on a hilltop with rough stone walls, a central courtyard, multiple towers, and defensive structures. The complex overlooks the Monte Amiata region and displays typical defensive architecture with strategically positioned access points.

The fortress was founded in the 12th century by the Aldobrandeschi family and served as a strategic outpost to control trade routes through southern Tuscany. It was an important power center in medieval local politics.

The fortress contains a permanent exhibition about David Lazzaretti, a 19th-century religious leader whose ideas shaped the local community. His story is woven into the displays and shows how this place influenced spiritual movements.

The fortress is open daily and offers visitors the chance to explore the grounds at their own pace or join organized tours. It is advisable to wear sturdy shoes since the paths cross cobblestone areas and hilly terrain.

The structures incorporate naturally occurring rock formations as foundation, creating architectural harmony between built elements and geological features. This design makes the fortress less susceptible to erosion and settling than conventional construction.
