Rocca delle Caminate

Rocca delle Caminate is a medieval fortress built on the site of a former Roman fortification, situated at roughly 356 meters (1,167 feet) above sea level within a large park. The structure features two brick ramparts flanking a central curtain wall across its 8-hectare (20-acre) grounds.

The fortress originated in the 10th century but underwent complete reconstruction between 1924 and 1927 in a neo-medieval style that shaped its current appearance. This extensive restoration determined much of what visitors see today.

The site functions as an educational center where university courses, conferences, and seminars take place in dedicated spaces. This role demonstrates how the fortress has been repurposed to serve contemporary learning and cultural gatherings.

The grounds are usually open on weekends, and special visiting arrangements can be made for groups at other times. It is wise to check conditions before traveling, as access and timing may vary.

A lighthouse was installed on the fortress to signal the presence of an important political figure during visits. This unusual feature reveals how the castle was used during more recent times.
