Operations began in 1830 under the rule of the Prince of Trabia and Butera and grew into one of central Sicily's principal sulfur extraction sites. The complex played a key role in the region's economy during the 19th century.

A notable feature of the mine is a transport system about 10 kilometers long that was built in 1904 and connected the extraction site to Campobello di Licata railway station. This innovative solution allowed extracted mineral to be moved quickly and efficiently for shipment.
