Tottori Sand Dunes, Natural monument in Tottori, Japan
The Tottori Sand Dunes extend across 30 square kilometers along the Sea of Japan, reaching heights of 50 meters with rippling formations shaped by coastal winds.
These sand formations emerged over 100,000 years ago when sediments from the Sendai River were deposited along the coast by marine currents.
The Tottori Sand Museum, established in 2006, presents annual exhibitions of intricate sand sculptures that showcase different international themes and artistic techniques.
Visitors can access the dunes via regular bus services from Tottori Station, with rental equipment available for sandboarding and paragliding activities.
The Umanose dune offers views of fishing boats using lights to attract squid at night, creating what locals call the sea fireflies phenomenon.
