Arashio stable, Sumo stable in Nihombashi, Japan
Arashio stable is a training facility for sumo wrestlers in the Hama-cho district of Tokyo, housed in a multistorey building with large windows facing the street. The training room with its characteristic sand ring sits on the ground floor and can be viewed from outside, while the upper floors serve as living quarters.
A former professional wrestler founded this facility at the beginning of the 21st century and later joined it to a larger group of training establishments. Since then it has been training young athletes and participating in nationwide tournaments.
This training facility follows the handed-down rules of sumo wrestling, where the athletes live together under one roof and support each other in their daily routine. The younger members prepare meals and take care of the premises, while the more experienced ones guide the training sessions.
Training sessions start in the early morning hours and can be watched from the street through the windows, as long as visitors remain quiet and do not disturb the operation. The nearest metro station is a few minutes' walk away and allows easy access.
A member of this facility achieved a tournament victory in spring 2022 and has since been among the most recognized active wrestlers in the country. This achievement brought nationwide attention to the entire training location and drew more visitors to the windows.
