Izumo-Hinomisaki Lighthouse, Stone lighthouse in Izumo, Japan

Izumo-Hinomisaki Lighthouse is a white stone structure rising at the western end of Shimane Peninsula, recognized as Japan's tallest stone lighthouse. The building features thick stone walls with a brick interior and stands out distinctly against the coastal landscape.

Built in 1903 from high-quality stones sourced near Moriyama, the lighthouse emerged during Japan's modernization of coastal navigation infrastructure. The double-wall construction combining stone and brick reflected building techniques of that era.

The name references a nearby shrine that has drawn visitors for centuries, linking this structure to local maritime traditions. It serves as a landmark that represents the region's connection to the sea and navigation history.

Visitors can climb a spiral staircase with 163 steps to reach the observation deck overlooking the coast. The best time to visit is during clear weather when views across the sea are most rewarding.

The tower remained the only stone lighthouse in the region for nearly a century, playing a central role in ship safety along this challenging coastline. Its light signal reached far into the sea, helping vessels navigate these treacherous waters.
