Kyoto Aquarium is a public aquarium in Shimogyō Ward, Kyoto, Japan, presenting over two hundred and fifty species of marine life. The facility consists of ten zones that guide visitors through different aquatic environments, from rivers to open seas.
The aquarium opened in March 2012, expanding Kyoto's offerings in marine education facilities. The complex received an addition in 2020 with a new zone dedicated to jellyfish.
The facility maintains exhibits of Japanese giant salamanders and other species native to Kyoto's rivers, connecting visitors with local aquatic wildlife.
The aquarium sits inside Umekoji Park, about fifteen minutes on foot from Kyoto Station. The facility opens daily, with last admission taking place several hours before closing time.
A collection of Japanese giant salamanders lives within the facility, displaying these rare amphibians native to Kyoto's rivers. The newly added zone hosts several thousand jellyfish in specially lit tanks.
