六堰, bridge in Japan
Rokuzeki is a weir system with multiple water-control gates along the river in Fukaya, Saitama. The main structure includes a management walkway, now called Shigeatsu Bridge, which provides both pedestrian access and viewing areas of the flowing water below.
The weir system was built approximately 400 years ago during the Edo period with six separate weir gates originally distributing water from the river. During the Showa period, the structure was consolidated into a single modern facility.
The weir system is named after Hatakeyama Shigeatsu, a significant historical figure in the region. Local farmers depend on this water source for their fields and orchards, making it central to the everyday life of surrounding communities.
The walkway across Shigeatsu Bridge allows visitors to view the system from above and watch water moving through the gates. The surrounding area offers quiet walking routes with views of the river's natural features.
Fish passages are integrated beneath the weir gates, allowing fish to move freely between different water levels. This design demonstrates an early attempt to balance water management with wildlife conservation in the region.
