Castle of Pico, Medieval castle in Mirandola, Italy
The Castle of Pico is a fortress in the historic center of Mirandola, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, now used as a cultural center. It features a grand loggia, exhibition halls on several floors, and a lecture hall.
The fortress was first built in 1102 and became militarily important during the power struggles of the 16th century. In the 17th century, Duke Alessandro II Pico ordered major expansions that turned it into a more representative residence.
Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, one of the most talked-about thinkers of the Renaissance, was born within these walls and grew up here. His name still defines how people relate to this place, and many visitors come with his story in mind.
The visit starts on the ground floor with a bookshop and exhibitions, then continues upward to the auditorium and temporary galleries on the upper floors. It is worth allowing enough time to move through all the levels without feeling rushed.
The elevated Bastion Garden was laid out over the space once occupied by the old defensive walls, giving visitors a rare chance to see the original fortification structure from above. Standing there, it becomes easy to understand how the fortress was once protected.
