Santa Maria in Viepri, Medieval abbey in Massa Martana, Italy.
Santa Maria in Viepri is a church in Massa Martana featuring stone facades, arched windows, and an octagonal layout topped with a dome. The structure was built between 1595 and 1598, showcasing the architectural style of that era.
Construction of the church began on March 8, 1521, though it took decades to reach its final form in the late 1500s. In 1589, local municipalities transferred ownership to a religious order.
The church houses a painting of the Madonna with Child surrounded by Saints John and James, created by Bartolomeo da Miranda in the 15th century. This artwork reflects the devotion that pilgrims and worshippers experience during their visits to this sacred space.
The church sits along the ancient Flaminia road, a short distance from the town center, with parking available nearby. The location is accessible on foot, though amenities in the immediate area are limited.
Between 1647 and 1649, artist Giovanni Antonio Polinori created elaborate frescoes on the dome depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament. These wall paintings remain visible under the vault, showcasing the artistic traditions of that period.

Umbria preserves traces of over two millennia of history through its archaeological sites, religious monuments, and remarkable natural formations. The region features underground complexes such as Orvieto Underground with its 1,200 passages carved into volcanic tuff, and Narni Underground, revealing medieval chapels and remains of Roman aqueducts. Visitors also explore the Dunarobba Fossil Forest, where 50 petrified tree trunks dating back three million years showcase the region's geological evolution. Medieval castles like Rocca Albornoziana overlook ancient towns, while monasteries such as San Pietro in Valle and Eremo delle Carceri maintain medieval art and spirituality. The Umbrian landscape stretches from Gubbio's Roman theaters to mountain villages like Castelluccio, perched at 1,452 meters (4,764 feet) above sea level, and includes the Nera Natural Park, which protects over 2,120 hectares (5,243 acres) of forests and limestone formations. These sites trace the region’s history from the Etruscan civilization through the Renaissance.
