Ehime Prefectural Dogo Zoo is a public zoo in Matsuyama, located within the Dogo Park area, and it houses animals from many different parts of the world. The enclosures are designed to resemble the natural environments where each animal comes from.
The zoo opened in the postwar period as part of a wave of public facilities built to serve education and recreation across the Shikoku region. Over time, the grounds were expanded and the care standards were updated to reflect changing views on animal welfare.
Many visitors arrive by tram, which runs directly to the entrance and is part of everyday life in Matsuyama. The stop serves as a natural meeting point where families gather before and after their visit.
The grounds are large, so comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially if you are visiting with children. There are shaded rest spots along the way where you can stop and take a break.
Across the grounds, fourteen natural rock formations are said to resemble different animals when seen from the right angle. Spotting all of them turns the visit into an informal game of observation.
