Palazzo del Giardino, Renaissance palace in Sabbioneta, Italy.
Palazzo del Giardino is a Renaissance palace built over two floors with a white plastered facade and carved oak cornices decorated with lion head corbels. Inside are several rooms including the Mirror Hall and the Chamber of Caesars.
Duke Vespasiano Gonzaga commissioned this private retreat between 1578 and 1587 after returning from his duties in Spain. The building was created as part of a broader urban development project during a period of cultural flourishing.
The interior rooms display frescoes by Bernardino Campi depicting scenes from mythology and ancient Rome. The paintings tell stories of gods and rulers spread across several decorated chambers.
Access to the noble floor is through a marble staircase that leads into multiple rooms. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the various chambers at a relaxed pace.
The palace connects to the Galleria degli Antichi through an archway and originally enclosed a trapezoidal garden with fountains. These water features demonstrated the technical skill and wealth of Renaissance rulers.
