Takehara, Heritage district in Takehara, Japan

Takehara is an old town district featuring traditional wooden structures from the Edo period arranged along a main street. These buildings display decorative wooden lattice patterns on their facades and showcase how buildings were constructed centuries ago.

The area shifted from rice farming to salt production in the 17th century, which brought wealth to local merchants. This prosperity led to the construction of the many residences visible in the district today.

The buildings here show how merchants displayed their success through architecture, with thick wooden beams and inner courtyards that hint at the private lives of prosperous families.

The district is easy to explore on foot, with quiet streets where visitors can walk at their own pace. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the older pathways can be uneven.

The district illuminates 5,000 bamboo lanterns during the Takehara Longing Road festival, drawing more than 30,000 visitors to the summer celebration.
