Takehara, Heritage district in Takehara, Japan

The old town stretches along Honmachi Street for 500 meters, featuring traditional wooden buildings with decorative lattice patterns from the Edo period.

During the 17th century, the area transformed from rice production to salt manufacturing, leading to merchant wealth that financed construction of numerous residences.

The Yoshii residence, constructed in 1691, represents the architectural style of wealthy merchants who controlled salt and sake trade in the region.

Visitors can reach the historical district by taking a 45-minute rapid train from Hiroshima to Hiro, followed by a 50-minute local train to Takehara.

The district illuminates 5,000 bamboo lanterns during the Takehara Longing Road festival, drawing more than 30,000 visitors to the summer celebration.
