金勝寺

Konshoji Temple sits on Mount Konze in eastern Shiga Prefecture and comprises several structures surrounded by old cedar and maple trees. The complex holds multiple buildings with historical religious artworks inside that are open for visitors to view.

The temple was founded in 733 following an imperial decree by Emperor Shomu, with the priest Roben overseeing its construction. This founding was intended to serve as spiritual protection for the nearby Shigaraki Palace.

This temple serves as a center for Buddhist practice and worship, where visitors can encounter carved wooden statues of Buddha and protective deities displayed within the buildings. The works reflect the spiritual traditions and artistic skills that have been maintained here for more than a thousand years.

The temple is located at 1394 Arahari in Ritto and has a parking area for vehicles on site. A fee is charged to enter the main buildings, and visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the terrain is hilly.

At its peak, the temple managed an extensive network of branch temples throughout the southern Lake Biwa region. This network demonstrates how important this center was for Buddhist infrastructure across the area during that period.
