Mitsuzuka Kofun, Ancient burial mound in Fujiidera, Japan.
Mitsuzuka Kofun is an ancient burial mound with a distinctive keyhole shape and surrounding moats that reflect traditional Japanese construction methods. The structure was built in layered earth and forms part of the Furuichi Kofun Cluster.
This burial mound was built between the 3rd and 6th centuries and belongs to a cluster of ancient burial sites from that period. The group received UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2019.
The burial mound shows how wealthy individuals in ancient times were laid to rest and what objects accompanied them. The discovered weapons and gilded bronze items tell stories of the power and status of these people.
The site is easily reached via Kintetsu Railway stations at Domyoji or Furuichi. The Sakai City Museum provides additional context and background about this and other archaeological sites in the area.
Excavations revealed that this burial mound was constructed using a specific technique where different layers of earth were systematically placed. This was an elaborate building effort that required significant time and organization.
