Circeo National Park, Protected coastal area in Lazio, Italy
The national park extends along the Tyrrhenian Sea, containing a limestone promontory, four coastal lakes, sand dunes, and the dense Selva di Circe forest.
Founded in 1934 under Mussolini's government, the park was established to preserve the remaining sections of the Pontine Marshes during their reclamation period.
The profile of Mount Circeo, rising to 541 meters, connects to Greek mythology as the supposed residence of the sorceress Circe from Homer's Odyssey.
Visitors can access multiple hiking paths through the forest, observe migratory birds at the coastal lakes, or explore the ancient caves along the promontory.
The park contains the largest plain forest in Italy, featuring temporary marshes that form during autumn among cork oaks, Turkish oaks, and bay laurels.
