Province of Latina, Italian province in Lazio, Italy
The Province of Latina is an administrative region in southern Lazio comprising 33 municipalities. It stretches from mountain areas in the east to the Tyrrhenian Sea coast in the west.
The province was created in 1934 following the massive drainage of the Pontine Marshes, which transformed the area from swampy wasteland into farmland. This project was one of the largest land reclamation efforts of the 20th century.
The area is shaped by old village communities where farming and livestock raising continue to define daily life. You see small fields, farmsteads, and people who still follow the rhythm of the seasons.
The province is well connected by roads linking all 33 municipalities and making different areas accessible. Public transportation exists between larger towns, but renting a car is practical for exploring the coast and mountains.
The Pontine Islands archipelago lies off the coast and includes several islands such as Ponza and Ventotene, which feature old Roman ruins and sandy beaches. The islands are reachable by ferry from the mainland and offer contrast to the inland areas.
