Riviera di Ulisse regional park, Nature reserve in Gaeta Gulf, Italy
The Riviera di Ulisse Regional Park stretches along the southern coast of Lazio between Gaeta and Sperlonga, combining terrestrial and marine protected areas with rocky cliffs and coastal forests. The reserve includes diverse habitats ranging from pine woodlands to underwater meadows and rocky seabeds along the shoreline.
The area served as a retreat for Roman elites who built villas and bathing complexes during antiquity. Remains of these structures, including the tomb of Lucius Munatius Plancus on Monte Orlando, still stand as reminders of the region's deep ties to the Roman period.
The natural monuments within the park feature the legendary Mountain Split of Gaeta, connected to religious traditions following the death of Christ.
The park has several walking trails and paths to explore its different landscapes on foot. For those interested in the marine environment, organized diving and snorkeling tours are available in the protected water zones.
The park's seabed is home to colorful corals, sea anemones, and fish species adapted to southern Mediterranean waters that are seldom found elsewhere. These underwater communities form a complex ecosystem carefully protected from disturbance.
