Santi Cosma e Damiano, Italian comune

Santi Cosma e Damiano is a small commune in the Province of Latina in Lazio, spread across rolling terrain and flat areas near the Garigliano river. The settlement is defined by several churches: the main sanctuary on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Church of San Luca on Via S. Luca, the Church of San Martino on Via Novara, the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso, the parish church of Sant'Antonio da Padova on Piazza della Santissima Trinità in the Campomaggiore district, and the Church of Grunuovo along the former railway line.

The settlement developed around a sanctuary dedicated to the two saints whose names the community bears, with origins mentioned in records more than a thousand years old. During the Middle Ages, the area fell under the influence of Montecassino monastery, and the region experienced numerous conflicts, including a major battle in 915 and later struggles during the Napoleonic period.

The town is named after two saints, Cosma and Damiano, brothers and physicians whose veneration shaped the community's identity. You can see today how these two patrons connect the people through yearly celebrations in late September and churches that serve as gathering points for festivals and local events.

The town is easy to navigate, with signs on walls and near churches providing directions and orientation information. Streets are uncrowded and move at a slow pace, making exploration on foot pleasant and straightforward.

During World War II, this town lay on the route of Allied troops advancing toward Rome and suffered heavy bombing that destroyed many old buildings. The community showed resilience as people helped rebuild their town after the war ended.
